We are passionate about Hawke’s Bay and the people who live and work here. We want to help create a balanced and sustainable future for generations to come.

Kākano Nurseries was established in February 2021 when our two families – the Barretts and Percivals – joined forces to meet a community need. We realised that a lot of local farmers and businesses were struggling to source plants for riparian margins or to re-plant native bush. So we set up our nursery, specialising in native plants cultivated from eco-sourced seeds, all germinated and grown right here in Flemington, Central Hawke’s Bay.

Eco-sourcing

Eco-sourcing seeds means plants are better suited to the local conditions. Hawke’s Bay has a unique climate – hot, dry summers and frosts in winter. By sourcing seeds from mature natives in the area our plants are better able to tolerate local conditions. We’re really lucky that we have a great network of people who allow us access onto their farms across the region where we can collect seed from mature QEII blocks and pockets of established native bush.

Grown to order

We also can grow plants to order – either with seed from your established natives or we can source other species for your planting projects.
